Welcome to ellenmaloney.com.

A general overview of me for the curious:

My degree is in printmaking and drawing.  I studied at Washington University in St. Louis.  My first dip into the printmaking world was in an intensive course in Florence at Santa Reparata Art Conservatory.  I stayed up until 4am nearly every night carving away and I haven’t turned back since.  While studying, I was actively organizing openings for myself as well as other artists and musicians.   After graduating I moved to Chicago where there are more fine art press shops.  I volunteered with Anchor Graphics while getting settled in the city.  At Anchor, I helped put on their renowned Printmakers Ball.   I then moved on to direct and curate a year long gallery project called ‘A Room with a View Gallery’ at The Drake Hotel.  A Room with a View hosted 12 shows with artists from a variety of mediums and culminated with a group show that was guest curated by Anchor Graphics.  I continue to do my own work and show in Chicago and St. Louis.

Technique:

I primarily work as a printmaker.  I like carving, so mostly I make woodcut prints. I am very tactile and physical and that is translated into the way I draw, paint, and carve. My mark making is intense and unrelenting.  I have found that drawing with a woodcutting tool fits in with my desire for more ‘extreme’ marks. Statement:

I am fascinated with the ways people do and don’t interact.  My life project is noticing and observing social situations.  I’m interested in how daily routine forms habits and skills that may never be known to people outside of that sphere.  I examine the interaction of necessity, habit, and random chance and then create a story to share with the viewer that reflects these observations.  Sometimes a character can be the loneliest person even when they’re in a big crowd.  Sometimes ‘crazy’ can’t help but invade the scene.  Othertimes, there’s a quiet moment of reflection.  I combine my memories, experiences, and observations to create my characters.  These stories and characters are added to one of 3 bodies of work that I’m continually working on.

The Art of Service is the ball of twine I’ve been adding to over the last few years. This work is derived from my 10 years of experience working in the industry. Having worked as a server in restaurants ranging from diners to fine dinning, cooking in bistros, bartending, and even supervising I find myself making work about what I know. In a city with more restaurants than people The Art of Service is an insider’s perspective on something to which we can all relate.

The Travel Times body of work is derived from experiences during my travels. Whether you are traveling to rural Missouri or Barcelona there's something about being someplace new that puts my senses on overload.

The next ball of twine that I’m rolling together is about Bad Habits.  We all have them, our mothers told us not to, and still we get caught in the act.
